Great battery, but suddenly half-died @ 12 months
This battery rocks - when it works. For the first year I had it, I took it through about 15 cycles, which were a wonderful 4-5 hours each. But after about a year (of very responsible treatment), a problem suddenly developed: the battery seemed to lose half of its capacity. It would run from 100% down to ~55% over about 2 hours, but then, suddenly drop to ~4% in an instant, and force my laptop to shut down. This happened (always, after the first time) on both XP and Windows 7. Also, a warning: if you buy the ThinkPlus warranty for your laptop, it does NOT cover the extended battery, if you get that! (Not sure if it covers the default battery.)

You should get one
The standard 4-cell that came with my X61 gave me an average of 2-3 hours worth of usage when brand new, and dropped to about 1.5 hours after a year's time.
I have gotten an average of 6 hours from this 8-cell battery brand new. After 18 months, it dropped to about 1.5-2 hours.
It is heavier than the 4-cell (unfortunate, but expected) and sticks out from the back, thus becoming somewhat of a tight fit in ultra-small laptop bags. With that in mind, I still highly recommend it.
I plan on purchasing another one with the expectation that I'll get a good 18 months out of it. However, after reading horrible reviews on the generic brands, I plan on purchasing this same one from Lenovo again this week.

1.5 years and still great.
I have been using this battery for nearly a year and a half and have not had a single problem. I use it on an X61s. This is my main computer and I use it mostly for development.
The battery has 283 charge cycles and though I used to get the full 8-ish hours per charge, I still get around 6. Considering the many hours of daily usage, that is far above expectations. I burn through a charge faster than usual thanks to the high processing power cost of software compiling but this battery is always up for it.
It's too bad that it's so expensive.

This battery gave 8 and sometimes more hours of use for the first year (~120 cycles) or so.
A gentle decline in battery life in the next six months put it down around 2, 2.5 hours, though the battery gauge would predict 4 or 5 after I reset it once.
When I tried to reset the gauge a couple of months later the battery died altogether.
So, 21 months, ~210 cycles, replacement cost: $180 and inconvenience of about half a year with lousy battery life.
But when new it provides a reliable half-day or more of real work.

great when it works
This will be the third battery I've had to buy for this computer in the last 3 years. Both batteries lasted about 1.5 years. It would work great and gradually hold less charge but somewhere about the 1.5 year mark, it suddenly takes a nose dive.
I hate that I have to buy new batteries every year and a half. But what other choices do we have?

ring of death
479 cycles 17 moths.
Dead all of a sudden (with no warning) while still giving a 3h work time as compared to about 5hr initially. From forums it looks like this is a very common problem for this battery and the only solution is a replacement.
It was used with their battery management software that is supposed to extend battery life.

ThinkPad Battery 22++ a poor replacement
I purchased and installed this replacement battery six months ago. Five months later, the battery held a charge only at 95%. Today it's at 85%. Original battery held at 99% consistently for 5 years. This is a poor replacement.
